enetic analysis of calf survival at different preweaning ages in beef cattle

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to assess the suitability of including calf survival traits in the breeding objective of beef cattle improvement programs. To do so, we analysed the genetic parameters affecting calf survival during the perinatal period (PS), between the perinatal period and weaning (LM) and at weaning (WS) using Asturiana de los Valles breed field data. Up to 36 125 calf survival records were used in the analysis. Heritabilities estimated for the direct effect ranged from 0.033 to 0.084 for PS, from 0.011 to 0.112 for LM and from 0.039 to 0.142 for WS. Our results suggest that LM is not affected by a maternal genetic component, whereas its effect is slight and similar in magnitude for both PS and WS. In general, the analysed traits are affected by a slight maternal permanent environmental effect ranging from 1 to 2%. PS and WS seem to be consistently determined by the same genes, presenting genetic correlations between the respective direct or maternal genetic effects of 0.95 and 1.0. Genetic correlation between the direct effects affecting PS and LM was 0.745. Current analyses show that WS has a higher genetic variability than would justify the inclusion of calf survival at weaning in the beef cattle breeding objective. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Testing a continuous variation in preweaning expression of muscular hypertrophy in beef cattle using field data Summary
The hypothesis of a continuous variation in the expression of muscular hypertrophy has been tested using field data. A modification of NEUVY and VISSAC's cularity index method (Culard Index) was assayed. Expression of muscular hypertrophy showed a broad phenotypical variability. Environmental factors affecting expression of muscular hypertrophy characterised by Culard Index were calving season,...
متن کاملAdditive, dominance, and epistatic loss effects on preweaning weight gain of crossbred beef cattle from different Bos taurus breeds.
(Co)variance components, direct and maternal breed additive, dominance, and epistatic loss effects on preweaning weight gain of beef cattle were estimated. Data were from 478,466 animals in Ontario, Canada, from 1986 to 1999, including records of both purebred and crossbred animals from Angus, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Salers, Shorthorn, and Simme...
متن کاملInteraction Between Calf Genetic Type and Subtropical Location for Preweaning Traits of Cattle Varying in Percentage Brahman Breeding
Studies involving different cattle genetic types evaluated under temperate and subtropical environmental conditions have revealed important genotype × environment interactions for most preweaning traits. A longterm study involving different lines of Hereford cattle evaluated under temperate (Miles City, MT) and subtropical (Brooksville, FL) environments revealed important genotype × environment...
متن کاملLivestock Farming Systems and Cattle Production Orientation in Eastern High Plains of Algeria, Cattle Farming System in Algerian Semi-Arid Region
This study was an attempt to devise productive orientations of cattle herds in eastern high plains of Algeria. In this regard, 165 farms randomly identified were investigated. The selection of breeders was based to existence of cattle on the farm, and the farmer proposed to investigation must have at least two cows. The approach taken was to identify all systems adopted by farmers in a region t...
متن کاملEffect of weather patterns on preweaning growth of beef calves in the Northern Great Plains
Records from a 76-year investigation into effects of line breeding and selection of Hereford cattle, and concurrent weather records, were used to assess effects of weather patterns on growth of suckling calves. Calf growth data were adjusted for trends arising from selection and inbreeding, and for effects of age of dam and sex of calf to produce clean estimates of year effects. Daily maximum a...
